What's
an RSS?
(What does it mean to me?) |

|
Really
Simple Syndication (RSS) is a technique for offering Internet-delivered
subscriptions to the contents of Web pages or other information.
RSS "feeds" can include headline news, the full
text of weblog postings or "blogs", lists of
the latest hit tunes, search engine results, even podcasts
of radio and video programs.
Users subscribe
to feeds with programs called "news readers"
or "aggregators".
A feed is simply a file that when updated by the owners
server, keeps its same name. Subscribed aggregators store
that files address, then check periodically to see if
the file has been updated. If it has been, the aggregator
downloads the latest version.
This makes it really easy for you, the subscriber, to
get automatic delivery of updated content...
Basically, instead of YOU going to GET information,
the information COMES to YOU. |

What's
a Reader?
(And how do I get one?) |
|
|
|
To
receive an RSS feed, you need what's called a "newsreader"
or content "aggregator".
It's similar
to using a radio to hear content. The station sends out
programs on he air and you need a radio set to be able
to pick up their shows. Publishers or website owners send
out their information in a format that can read through
what's termed an RSS feed and subscribers (you) need a
newsreader to be able to read it online.
There are Web-based
readers like Bloglines and My Yahoo! you can download.
There are also
downloadable newsreaders you can install on your desktop.
Some newsreaders are free, others are not.
Newsreaders
offer a variety of special features, such as allowing
you to keep up with content you have marked as read so
you don't "clutter" and can stay better organized.
Once you set
up your reader with your preferences, it will collect
the feeds you're interested in every time there is an
update.

Similar to bookmarked
pages on websites, you go to blogs.
RSS "feeds"
automatically come to you.
Weblogs (commonly
refered to as "Blogs") are simply web pages
that show the most recently updated stories/news/content
at the top of entries.
Blogs can take
on many forms: news, gossip columns, commentaries, personal
dairies, even classroom journals.
Blogs can generate
RSS feeds also.
